Mark Tami meets with Derek Vaughan MEP

Derek Vaughan MEP met with MP Mark Tami on Friday 13th January to see how funding from Europe is making a real difference in Deeside. Mr Vaughan and Mr Tami visited the home of Shotton residents, Mr and Mrs Gould whose property has recently had major insulation work completed thanks to the ARBED Scheme.
The ARBED Programme is administered in the area by Flintshire County Council and supports the commitments of The Welsh Government to reduce climate change, help eradicate fuel poverty and boost economic development and regeneration in Wales.
Mr and Mrs Gould’s property along with 5 other properties were built around 1870 and had no insulation or double glazing making the homes difficult to heat with high fuel bills. Now following extensive work these homes have been brought up to modern energy efficiency standards. The scheme is on-going and is already rolling out to other areas on the Deeside strip with another 10 properties in Connah’s Quay already underway.
The Welsh Government invested £30m into the first phase of ARBED, levering in an additional £31m. This equates to total investment of around £61m. Phase one of the programme funded measures in over 6000 households in Wales. Now into Phase 2 the total budget available will be up to £45,000,000. This includes £33,000,000 European Regional Development Funds. The overall investment objectives of the ARBED phase 2 project are to:
• improve the energy efficiency of a minimum of 4800 existing homes in Wales by the end of 2015;
• reduce a minimum of 11.6 KTCO2 (Kilo tons of carbon dioxide) of greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2015.
Mark Tami said “This is a fantastic scheme that not only serves to improve the energy efficiency of people’s homes but also lifts the character and appearance of the properties themselves. I look forward to many more properties in the area benefitting from this scheme.” Mrs Amanda Gould who lives at one of the properties that benefitted said, “All the work done has been marvelous and without a shadow of doubt my home is 100% warmer. I now rarely have the heating on and my bills are definitely on the way down”.
Derek Vaughan said, “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to see the work that has been done on Mr and Mrs Gould’s home and how funding from Europe has made this possible. The ARBED programme is doing an excellent job making homes warmer and cutting fuel bills right across Wales. It’s a great success”.

MP Pushes for AirTanker Project

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami has called on the government to reiterate British support for a crucial Airbus aircraft.

Mr Tami called on Defence Minister Peter Luff to back the AirTanker project to secure tens of thousands of jobs in the UK.

He added: “It is the best option in comparison with the more expensive and sub-standard option put forward by Boeing.”

In response, the Minister said: “I am quite clear that the AirTanker will be an outstanding aircraft and do its job very wekll. It is urgently needed to repair a fragile air bridge and perform its main function of in-air refuelling as well. I understand, however, the Hon. Gentleman’s point of view.”

MP Urges Residents to Claim Part of £20 Million

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami is today urging constituents who overpaid for gas supply from npower in 2007 to take advantage of their refund and get their share of more than £20 million still unclaimed.

On 1 October 2010 npower and Consumer Focus announced that the energy supplier would be offering £70 million of refunds to customers. Since then almost 1.2 million customers have been paid over £51 million in total but there are still 700,000 people who have yet to claim their refund. Consumer repayments range from £1 to £100 with the average payment at £35 plus VAT and interest.

Local residents who were customers of npower in 2007, but have since left the supplier or moved house, are particularly likely to be missing out. Anyone who thinks they might be entitled to a refund should call npower’s helpline on 0800 975 7938 or visit npower’s website to find out if they can claim. Consumers can also find further information about the npower repayments at www.consumerfocus.org.uk or https://customerservices.npower.com.

Mr Tami said:

“It’s a great win for consumers that over 50 million pounds has already been returned.”

“I encourage all Flintshire npower customers with a payment letter at home to take it to the local post office now and get the cash they are owed.”

“Anyone who thinks they are entitled to a refund including former npower customers should call their helpline on 0800 975 7938 to see if they are eligible”

Call Made to Save Corus Jobs

Mark Tami has called on the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, to support demands for Corus to reconsider the decision to axe almost 200 jobs.
He said: “This is a hammer blow to all those employees and their families, as well as the local economy. Will the Secretary of State join me in pressing the company to reconsider its decision and also look at the future of the whole modular construction business?”
In response, Mr Cable agreed to meet with Mr Tami and added: “I do not know the details of the case, and I have to say at the outset that we are not in a position to make available large amounts of public money, but if we can help in other ways we will.”
Mr Tami will now offer Corus owners, Tata Stell, the opportunity to ask the government for appropriate help in salvaging steel jobs at Shotton.
He said: “I will be holding the government to its word on this as help is needed in rescuing the jobs that could be lost at the Living Solutions facility.”
