Union Reps Declare Airbus Jobs Summit a Success

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami was joined by trade union representatives from Airbus today for crucial talks with Trade Secretary Peter Mandelson.
The summit included Airbus works convener Terry Dillion, who said Lord Mandelson pledged to do all he could for the Broughton workers.
He added: “The Secretary of State was incredibly supportive and had an excellent grasp of the facts and figures.
"He was friendly, understanding and knowledgeable. He knew what we were talking about and is keen to work as hard as possible for Airbus workers."
Talks focused on the next generation of aircraft, which will utilise cutting-edge composite wing technology. These projects will begin with the A400M military aircraft, which is due to replace the Royal Air Force’s fleet of aging Hercules planes.
Mark said: "We discussed at length the significance of the A400M in developing composite wing technology on British soil.
“While recognising the A400M has suffered developmental problems, it is a vital lead-in to other projects, including the crucial A350.
"We secured recognition and reassurance over the support needed from the British government in fighting for aerospace jobs. I am confident that in Lord Mandelson we have the strongest ally imaginable."

Mark Urges Clampdown on Aftermarket Exhausts

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami is calling for tougher noise limits on aftermarket sports exhausts.
Mr Tami said communities across Flintshire are being affected by motorists who use loud sports exhausts on their vehicles.
He added: "The level of noise from some of these aftermarket exhausts is unacceptable.
"For MOT tests they are removed, but fitted back onto the car after it has passed the test.
"What we need is a tougher set of rules governing the manufacture and sale of after market sports exhausts. I am calling on Ministers to introduce lower limits on noise levels and for police to have the power to confiscate exhaust waffles that are too loud.
"This is a form of anti social behaviour that affects every community. In other European countries it would not be tolerated and I do not believe it should be allowed here."

Mark Hosts Litter Picking Session

Mark Tami has held the first of his litter picking sessions in Sealand.
Mr Tami was helped by volunteers, who cleaned up the community playing field and housing estates.
He said: “It was great to have the help of local councillors and community support officers.
“We need to keep on top of litter in all our communities and this spring I will be organising similar efforts in several towns and villages.”
Sealand County Councillor Chris Jones added: “We have regular blitzes in the community to stop the area from being strewn with litter and this session definitely helped.
“Flintshire Neighbourhood Services and the Probation Team work hard to clean up our communities, but everyone can help by putting litter in bins instead of dropping it on pavements.”

A Decade of the Minimum Wage

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the National Minimum Wage.
April 1st marks a decade of the minimum wage in the UK, which has benefited thousands of people in Flintshire.
He said: "Nationally more than a million workers have benefited from the minimum wage.
"It should not be taken for granted as the Tories still oppose the concept of a minimum wage and the Liberal Democrats describe increasing it as dangerous.
"The Minimum Wage should be defended and annual increases should be supported. It helps some of our poorest families and ensures that it pays to work, especially with the help of Tax Credits."

Massive Help for SMEs Announced

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami has welcomed a massive package of support for small and medium sized enterprises.

The Government has announced a package of measures designed to address the cash flow, credit and investment needs of small and medium businesses.

The support package, which builds upon the commitments outlined in November’s Pre Budget Report, consists of loan guarantees and a new Enterprise Fund aimed at helping companies struggling to access finance for working capital and investment.

The Government measures include a £10bn Working Capital Scheme, securing up to £20bn of short term bank lending to companies with a turnover of up to £500m.

It will also include an Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme, securing up to £1.3bn of additional bank loans to small firms with a turnover of up to £25m, as well as a £75m Capital for Enterprise Fund to invest in small businesses which need equity.

Mr Tami said: “The primary cause of concern among businesses I have been speaking with is access to credit.

“It is vital that every level of Government acts swiftly and decisively to assist businesses. We cannot sit on out hands or allow ourselves to be complacent at a time that calls for intervention and action.”
