Tuesday saw the incoming of a new Prime Minister. Boris Johnson won the Tory leadership contest with a landslide victory over Jeremy Hunt. 

The result was called by political commenters weeks prior to Tuesday. The inevitability of the result should not pay testament to the competence of Johnson, instead it should highlight the immensely difficult times we find ourselves in as a country. 

Boris Johnson won the support of Tory MPs despite them knowing the limits of his capabilities – limits that were brought into the spotlight during his somewhat calamitous time in the Foreign Office. His support amongst Tory MPs has strengthened since, with MPs who have openly criticised him in the past now claiming he is the best man for the job. Instead of putting the country first they are more concerned about securing their next cabinet role. 

The rhetoric used by Boris Johnson has been incredibly careless at times and not fitting for a Prime Minister. It should not cross anybody’s, never mind a politician’s, mind to liken Muslims to letterboxes or to call gay people ‘bum boys’. Despite this, the Tory membership have voted for him to be their leader. 

Our new Prime Minister has been voted in by 90,000 people, that’s 0.2% of the population. He was voted in by promising the real threat of a No-Deal Brexit – something that was never mentioned in 2016 and something that I have always opposed.  

It is difficult to say where we go from here, however one thing for sure is that the legitimacy of his premiership is deeply flawed. 

Boris Johnson has fulfilled a life-long ambition in becoming Prime Minister and although I am very much sceptical, I do hope he begins to put the country first and goes about bringing the country together.  

His campaign would suggest that the everyday person is low down on his priorities. He has promised tax breaks for the rich and no doubt he will continue to defend bankers at every opportunity. 

A Labour Government will rebuild the communities that have been decimated by 9 years of Tory austerity. I only hope we do not have to wait too long before that can happen.
