Alyn & Deeside MP Mark Tami has taken his campaign for tougher controls on the sale and use of fireworks to Downing Street. Mr Tami joined with Parliamentary colleagues to present a 250,000 strong petition at the famous black door.

The latest stage in the campaign comes as it was announced that, in a move with the DTI, air bombs and mini-rockets, the two prime culprits in anti-social behaviour will be voluntarily withdrawn from the market.

The local and national campaign was prompted by dozens of letters from constituents supporting calls for tough new laws and reporting firework disturbances all times of the day and night.

Mr Tami said, “Although I do not think we should ban all sales of fireworks, we need to look at restricting the times of year when fireworks can be sold and let off. There is now a clear need to introduce strict safety criteria on fireworks sales and we should license people who perform public displays so that only licensed pyrotechnicians are able to perform them.

According to statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry the total number of people hurt during the bonfire celebrations last year topped 1,362. Accidents involving under 18s also went up – from 557 to 787.

Mr Tami added, “Unfortunately, fireworks are likely to become a particular nuisance over the next few weeks, so I will continue to work with my colleagues in Parliament and up the pressure on Ministers to act.”
