We have now had to endure two weeks of the new Government’s campaigning. The propaganda they are releasing suggests that they are pumping money into public services and infrastructure – something Labour remains completely committed to.

I welcome the commitments, however they need to be honest with the public. They say they are going to put 20,000 more police officers on the street but fail to mention that since they came into power, they have actually taken 20,000 officers off the street.

They say they want to give the NHS a 1.8 billion windfall but fail to mention that chronic underfunding over the past 9 years has led to crumbling hospitals needing £6billion worth of funding just to bring them up to standard.

The Tories say they will reverse school cuts by putting £4.6 billion into our schools. These cuts however are cuts implemented by consecutive Tory governments, a lot of the time with Boris Johnson sat around the cabinet table.

Properly funding the NHS and the education system have been promises uttered by the Tories on numerous occasions, yet the past 9 years have been quite the contrary. The Tories can’t be trusted to deliver on their promises. In fact, over half the £1.8billion NHS pledge has been found not to be new funds and they haven’t said where the rest is coming from.

I stood on a completely funded manifesto in 2017 which promised to properly invest in the NHS. We will give £10 billion of capital funding to make sure that NHS buildings and IT systems are fit for the modern day. The manifesto I stood on also promised significantly more than the Tory’s £4.6billion education pledge, and that was two years ago

Boris Johnson may pretend he cares about the everyday person but in reality, the only people who will benefit from a Johnson Government will be the wealthy few who will reap the rewards of his initial promise for higher rate tax threshold.

Only a Labour government can be trusted to properly fund our public services. In the meantime, I will be scrutinising this Government to ensure everyday people aren’t left behind.
