Internet speeds in Britain

I have become increasingly concerned about internet speeds across Britain. I have had a number of constituents approach me expressing their dissatisfaction and I believe that some people in Flintshire, as well as a number of businesses, are being let down by infrastructure that needs urgent attention.

It is not right that businesses, who rely extensively on super-fast reliable broadband, are waiting so long for a service that is essential for companies who want to remain competitive in today’s commercial environment.

Poor connectivity is having a negative effect on businesses across Flintshire; and if this is not resolved then investment in the area could be affected as we may see companies reluctant to come to the area. I have been very impressed with local initiatives to entice businesses to Flintshire, I am however very concerned that these efforts are being undermined by internet speeds that cannot compete with other areas.

I have been in regular contact with BT regarding the issue. I have raised the concerns of the constituents and local businesses who have contacted me with OpenReach and they have in turn recognised that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, such is the demand for super-fast broadband, BT are struggling to meet deadlines.

This is not just a local issue but a national issue and it is worrying that the British economy has to compete with the rest of the world with the restraints of poor connectivity.

Locally the main issues are with small isolated areas that lie between two well connected areas. Whilst connecting 95% of the UK to high speed broadband is a commendable goal, this will of course leave a small minority disappointed. I have however had assurances from OpenReach that they remain committed to improving the services in our area.

I appreciate that there are a number of people, including myself, who remain frustrated with their connectivity. I can assure you that I will continue to put pressure on the relevant bodies to address the concerns of residents; and to ensure businesses in Flintshire have every opportunity to thrive with up to date broadband infrastructure.
