Ban on plastic bags urged

MP Mark Tami has called for a ban on the production of plastic bags.

Mr Tami said plastic shopping bags should give way to more degradable bags for use in supermarkets and fashion stores.

He said: “In much of America paper-based bags are widely used in shops and are seen by top retail outlets as being far superior to plastic bags.

“I want to see a ban on the production of plastic bags for shopping purposes, but in the meantime I’d like to see supermarkets charge for them.

“In Deeside and beyond we see Plastic bags blighting our communities. They take considerably longer to degrade than paper and card and become tangled in hedges and trees.”
