MP re-affirms opposition to top up fees

A local MP has made clear that he is still opposed to the introduction of top-up fees. Alyn & Deeside MP Mark Tami has added his support to a parliamentary motion expressing concern about the impact top-up fees would have on prospective students.

Mr Tami commented, “I have always maintained my opposition to the introduction of so called top-up fees and continue to do so. I fear that they could exclude students from attending university and leave graduates with huge debts.

If we allow universities to increase fees at their own discretion up to £3000 we could create a two tier higher education system.

I am joining with many of my parliamentary colleagues in urging the Government to review its policy so that students are not excluded from attending university on the basis of cost.”

MPs are set to debate the contentious issue over the next couple of months.
