Suez medal announcement welcome news

Mark Tami MP has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of a new medal clasp for service in the Suez Canal Zone between 1951 and 1954.

Mr Tami commented, “This is great news for Alyn & Deeside veterans who are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. I am informed that the Honours and Decoration Committee recognised that the case had special features.

The new clasp will cover service in the Canal Zone from the period from the start of the riots following the Egyptians’ abrogation of the 1936 Treaty with the UK in October 1951 until the agreement between the two Governments on British evacuation which was signed in July 1954 which effectively ended the emergency.”

An estimated 200,000 troops may have served in the Canal Zone between 1951 and 1954. Veterans or the next of kin of those who dies, will in due course need to apply in writing to the appropriate medal office, giving full name, date of birth and service number For further information you can call the Veterans Agency helpline on 0800 169 2277.
