Mark Tami MP has made clear his support for Government plans to make it easier to prosecute litter louts as part of a wider crackdown on anti-social behaviour. Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael unveiled proposals to modernize laws governing streets and public places.

The Alyn & Deeside MP has written to the Minister to pledge his backing for the proposals, which, amongst other things, would see discarding chewing gum classified as littering for the first time, attracting fines of up to £50.

Mr Tami commented, “I welcome any initiative that clamps down on the litter that blights our communities. I have received many representations from constituents who are concerned about this matter, and, earlier in the year ran a local campaign to cut down on the amount of litter on our streets.

Enforceable fines could act as a deterrent and make those tempted to drop litter or spit out their chewing gum think twice. We all know how frustrating it is to get somebody’s discarded gum stuck to our shoes or clothes.”

A consultation paper was issued last Thursday and anybody that wishes to contribute to the consultation can access it on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs website at www.defra.gov.uk under the heading ‘Living Places’ – Cleaner, Greener, Safer.
